Welcome to Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site
Step back in time and discover life on the Wyoming frontier! Fort Phil Kearny served as the central post for the three forts guarding the Bozeman Trail and became a focal point of Red Cloud’s War, witnessing the most pivotal clashes between the U.S. Army and allied Plains tribes.
Begin your visit in our new Interpretive Center, where you can explore the history of the Fort and its associated tribes, namely the Crow, Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapho. Then, walk through reconstructed stockade walls and explore the original grounds of the largest stockaded fort in the American West. Interpretive signs mark the locations of historic buildings and reveal stories of the soldiers, families, and other colorful characters who lived and worked at this remote outpost.
Be sure to stop into our bookstore, where we have something for everyone!
Fort Phil Kearny would like to thank the Helmsley Charitable Trust for their investment in the site's newly remodeled and expanded Interpretive Center
